Latcham Art Centre presents “IMAGES 2022-2023: Adomania”, an exhibition of artwork by graduating students of Stouffville District Secondary School. The exhibition is on view from Wednesday, December 14, 2022 to Saturday, January 14, 2023. Join us for the opening reception on Wednesday, December 14, 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Light refreshments. Artists in attendance. All welcome, admission free.

Author John Koenig coined the term adomania as “the sense that the future is arriving ahead of schedule…” in his 2021 publication, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.

Adomania brings together artwork by senior students from Stouffville District Secondary School as they re-enter the classroom, many of them for the first time since their initial year in high school. Collectively, the works try to make sense of the speeding time within the pandemic by looking at themes of class discussions, art history, music and their lives before and during the pandemic. Individually, each piece reveals unique struggles that the artists face as they transition into adulthood beyond high school.

In reflecting on their unique educational experiences, the artists state: “It can be said that high school is the final phase before adulting, in which adolescents can explore their passions, discover their identity, and prepare for the coming chapters of life. However, the pandemic forced us to leave during our freshman year, only to suddenly face the reality of our senior year. The repetitive daily schedules quickly broke our perceptions of time, accelerating it. The need to decide on a post-secondary path too quickly imposed itself on our lives.”

Artworks in Adomania are inspired by multiple activities discussed in class, including the fauvist and surrealist periods. The album covers, specifically, reflect the various artists and the positive influence music had on the students during the turbulent period of their lives. In addition, they pay tribute to the mid-1960s, in which records were the dominant musical form.

Featured artists include Chris Baird, Suellen Beltran, Owen Biricz, Mary Bruce, Lily Carbajal, Jessica Chung, Willow Holywell, Sakura Huang, Jenny Meixin Jiang, Georgina Keeler, Nithusha Ketheeswaran, Bella Larosa, Chaenee Lee, Taeja Octeau, Julia Pelosi, Sophia Perez Erazo, Yasmina Rahhal, Aarnav Sachidanandan, Phoenix Towers and Ivan Tsang.

Please join us for the opening reception on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Remarks will begin at 7:30 PM. Latcham Art Centre gratefully acknowledges the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, the Lions Club of Stouffville and the Ontario Arts Council for their generous support of this exhibition. The artists would also like thank Onalee Webb, their dedicated art teacher, for her continued support and guidance.
