The full title of this book is “The Memory Librarian, and Other Stories of Dirty Computer” and it comes from the endlessly inventive mind of Janelle Monáe, a highly accomplished singer, songwriter, actress, and fashion icon. Now she can add author to her impressive resumé!
Monáe’s dystopian science fiction concept album “Dirty Computer” was a critical and commercial success. It was first accompanied by an award-winning short film (or an “emotion picture” as she has called it) and now by this collection of stories, each written in collaboration with an author of speculative fiction.
The idea of life within a futuristic totalitarian state is not a new one in contemporary science fiction, but Monáe and her co-writers dive head first into issues such as racism and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Even in the darkest depths of an oppressive state, the authors allow their characters to find optimism, love, and hope for a better future.
You don’t have to be a fan of Janelle Monáe to appreciate this collection of stories, but if you’re a fan of her music or other works, be sure to check it out.
